Government scrapping current plans for Local Government Reorganisation in Leicestershire welcomed
News that the government are dropping their current proposals for local government reorganisation in Leicestershire have been welcomed by Leicestershire Liberal Democrats.
One of the leading campaigners against the government plans was Liberal Democrat leader on Leicestershire County Council Michael Mullaney. When the government plans were first announced Michael called an emergency meeting of Leicestershire County Council and put forward a motion opposing the government’s plans. This motion was passed overwhelmingly by the County Council.
Responding to the news the government has dropped the plans Michael Mullaney said “It is very good news that the government have dropped these plans. The government plans for Leicestershire were a disaster. They would have seen a massive increase in the boundaries of Leicester City and dragged hundreds of thousands of people from Leicestershire and into Leicester city against their will. It would also have seen one authority for the rest of Leicestershire which would have been too big and distant from residents.
“Clearly all the campaigning has worked and forced the government to rethink on this. So thank you to all the residents who supported the campaign against these plans.
“Government says they will look at the issue again in the new year and come forward with new plans. I hope they will drop Local Government Reorganisation altogether, it is costly disruptive and unnecessary.”
