County Council backs Lib Dem calls for fair deal for Leicestershire

Leicestershire County Council has backed a motion which calls strongly on the government to start giving Leicestershire a fair deal for funding and to stop putting it to the back of the queue when it comes to the provision of essential public services.

 Proposing the motion was Michael Mullaney leader of Leicestershire Liberal Democrat councillors. Michael said “For years Leicestershire has been put to the bottom of the league for funding both by the last Tory government and the current Labour one. This must change. Our area deserves the fairly funded roads, pavements, public transport and education services that other areas have.

“Our area is also hit by having fire, ambulance and Police services which receive a lot less funding than the national average. The lack of police and other essential services hurts the lives of the people of Leicestershire. This is unfair and needs to change.

“I thank all the Councillors who unanimously supported my motion. Now it’s time for the government to listen and start giving Leicestershire the fair deal it deserves.”

Seconding the motion was Liberal Democrat County Councillor Ann Pendlebury she said “Leicestershire County Council has been forgotten by successive governments for many, many years. We see this in how we continue to remain the worst funded County in the Country. We need to send a message to the Chancellor that this has to stop now. We must call for the Chancellor to demonstrate that the residents of Leicestershire matter as much as every other County in the Country and fund our County properly.”
