Hinckley and Bosworth Liberal Democrat Councillor Michael Mullaney spoke at the party’s national conference in support of an action plan to sort out the sewage scandal.

Michael said “It’s an outrage that in Hinckley and Bosworth our waterways had sewage discharged into them for over 5,000 hours over 800 separate spills last year, and it’s a similar situation in waterways across the country.

“Lib Dem proposals on ending the sewage scandal include:

  • Scrapping the ineffective OFWAT and replacing it with a new Clean Water Authority with statutory powers to hold the water companies legally to account.
  • Compel the water companies to reveal the amount of sewage they discharge into waterways not just the number of times they do it.
  • Failing water companies to be brought into Mutually Owned Public Benefit Corporations, jointly owned by customers, with all surpluses reinvested directly into improving the water system rather than paid out as dividends.”

Michael added “it’s appalling that our waterways continue to be despoiled by filthy sewage. It’s time for the government to take on board these proposals and end the great sewage scandal.”.
