Campaigners have welcomed Leicestershire Fire Authority's decision to defer its plans to cut by eight the number of Firefighters based in Hinckley. At a meeting this afternoon members of the Fire Authority decided to delay the decision for six months.

Michael Mullaney, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Bosworth, who helped organise a 5,000 name petition against the cuts said "We welcome the fact that the Fire Authority did not decide to go ahead with the cuts but are disappointed that the cuts could still happen in six months time.

"The plans to cut eight Firefighters from Hinckley would damage our local Fire services. We will continue the campaign against the cuts and hope that in six months time the plans are shelved for good."

Denise Wood from the Pensioners Action Group said "The team of forty firemen (four crews of ten) is essential for an area the size of Hinckley and the surrounding villages."
