Campaign against the "Tenant Tax" goes to Regional Conference

18 Feb 2009

Liberal Democrats in Hinckley and Bosworth are taking their campaign against the "Tenant Tax" to their regional conference.

East Midlands Liberal Democrat chairman and Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Bosworth, Michael Mullaney, will be proposing a motion calling for the scrapping of the Negative Hosing Subsidy, which has been called a "Tenant Tax".

Many local councils, including Hinckley and Bosworth, have to transfer millions of pounds of rent money to the government. This money is then either spent on housing projects in other parts of the country or goes directly into government coffers.

Michael Mullaney said "At a time of financial crisis it is completely unfair that the government should be making thousands of tenants in Hinckley and Bosworth pay more in rent than they need to. This is a tax which is hitting some of the poorest in our community.

"Getting rid of this "Tenant Tax" would mean more money could be ploughed into speeding up repairs and improvements to Council Houses here in Hinckley and Bosworth."

The motion will be debated and voted on at the East Midlands Liberal Democrat conference which is taking place in Stamford, Lincolnshire on Saturday 21st February.
