Bid to clampdown on scrap metal theft welcomed

Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed a proposed new law which seeks to clamp down on scrap metal theft.

Lancashire MP Graham Jones is putting forward a "Metal Theft (Protection) Bill" before the House of Commons, where it is due to have its second reading on 20th January.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Hinckley and Bosworth Cllr Michael Mullaney said "I hope all local MPs will give their support to this proposed new law.

"Scrap metal theft is a nuisance for many local people. For example, the stealing of copper telephone wiring from outside of Barlestoneearlier this year saw many people left without telephone and internet services until it was repaired.

"With the price of metal high at the moment it's a lucrative crime and more needs to be done to deter those involved in it, passing this law would be a help."

Cllr David Bill added "A number of premises have had stolen across the whole of Leicestershire including several churches. It is a source of constant concern for people who care for this vital part of our heritage."
