AGM Success

24 Nov 2008

A well attended Annual General Meeting of Hinckley and Bosworth Liberal Democrats held at the Millennium Hall in Burbage on Friday, heard how the party had made huge progress locally over the past year.

Cllr Stuart Bray Bosworth Liberal Democrat Chairman said "2008 has been another year of progress for local Liberal Democrats. In the three council by-elections held this year we comfortably won Hinckley Castle and Burbage Lash Hill and nearly trebled our vote in Markfield."

Bosworth Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Spokesman Michael Mullaney outlined to the meeting the issues local Lib Dems would be campaigning on "Putting forward policies to help local people get through the financial crisis must be the top priority for Bosworth Liberal Democrats over the next year.

"Unemployment locally is rising. According to government figures nearly a thousand people in Bosworth constituency are unemployed, a 30% rise in one year. Winter is upon us and it's now estimated that there could be more than 5,000 families in Hinckley and Bosworth living in fuel poverty. Home repossessions are rising and many local people are struggling to make ends meet.

"Our policies of cutting taxes to put more money in local people's pockets will help people get through the recession and give the local economy a boost to help stop rising unemployment.

"Energy companies should be made to reduce vulnerable customers bills. We believe that during the economic crisis the courts should only allow home repossessions as a last resort."

The AGM also elected Bosworth Liberal Democrat's officers for the next year they were;

President Valerie Bill

Chairman Cllr Stuart Bray

Vice-Chair Genesta Cope

Secretary Ann Crabtree

Treasurer Cllr Keith Lynch

Membership Secretary Cllr Adrian Smith
